After a few lo-fi photos were leaked from the set, the Toronto International Film Festival has provided the first official look at André 3000‘s Jimi Hendrix from the forthcoming biopic, All Is By My Side. Directed by John Ridley, the film has long been the subject of much controversy thanks to the Hendrix estate’s refusal to officially get behind the project. As such, the biopic is set to focus on the years before Hendrix’s fame and will lack any of the guitar legend’s own original songs. Instead, as Spin points out, the film will see André 3000′s Hendrix performing everything from The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” – he once played the song in front of the band just days after its 1967 release – and Elvis covers to pieces by Muddy Waters and the Troggs’ “Wild Thing,” which closed Hendrix’s infamous guitar-burning set at the Monterey Pop Festival in California that same year. All Is By My Side is set to premiere at this year’s TIFF this September.
